The importance of the ANSI ADA Standard for digital intraoral radiographic systems--a pragmatic approach to quality assurance.
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI)/American Dental Association (ADA), the authority on dental standards for the United States published Quality Assurance Standard 1094 for Digital Intraoral Radiographic Systems. This standard presents a paradigm shift to a scientific and objective method of QA rather than one based on subjective assessments. This publication counters disseminated myths and misconceptions with scientific evidence and will help dental practitioners appreciate and understand the benefits of the new ANSI/ADA Standard No. 1094: Quality Assurance for Digital Intra-Oral Radiographic Systems.

Improvements in image quality after optimization in digital intraoral radiographs.
In this study the American National Standard/American Dental Association Standard No. 1094: Quality Assurance for Digital Intra-Oral Radiographic Systems was applied to 7 digital intraoral systems. Using the image quality properties of dynamic range, spatial resolution, and contrast perceptibility, the maximum diagnostic image was determined for each of the 7 systems. Along with this the optimal exposure - the proper balance between image quality and radiation dose was determined for each of the 7 systems. Radiographic images obtained at the optimal exposure yielded better visualization and more accurate measurements of the file tip to relative to the apex.

Applying the New ADA Quality Assurance Standard to Digital Intraoral Radiographic System.
This article is intended to describe the appropriate quality assurance (QA) methods for digital intraoral radiographic systems in accordance with No. 1094: Quality Assurance for Digital Intra-Oral Radiographic Systems. This article goes step by step through the digital imaging chain (the intraoral X-ray generator, the image receptor and acquisition software and the image display device), so the reader can achieve a complete understanding of what is required to successfully implement a comprehensive QA protocol within their own practice.

Quality assurance: acceptance testing for digital dental intraoral sensors.
Acceptance testing is a key component of a quality assurance program to ensure that the product or service works as intended when delivered. Using the QA process as published in ANSI/ADA Standard No. 1094: Quality Assurance for Digital Intra-Oral Radiographic Systems, the acceptance tests were conducted. In this study 147 sensors delivered from 5 different manufacturers were evaluated for proper functioning "straight out of the box". Thirty-five of the 147 DIOS (23.8%) or roughly 1 out of every 4 new digital dental intraoral sensors was found to have a problem.

Digital intraoral radiographic quality assurance.
Working with a representative sample of private practice dental offices, this study examined and evaluated the entire digital intraoral radiographic system used in each operatory.

Evaluation of image quality parameters of representative intraoral digital radiographic systems.
This journal article describes the use of the Digital Dental Quality Assurance (DDQA) phantom to objectively analyze and compare 20 different digital intraoral imaging systems. This is the most comprehensive objective analysis of imaging parameters (contract/detail resolution, spatial resolution and dynamic range) for commercially available digital dental intraoral imaging systems every reported in the dental literature.

Quality assurance phantom for digital dental imaging.
This journal article reviews some general principles of quality assurance as it relates to digital intraoral radiography. It also describes the development, design, utilization and validation of a novel radiographic phantom (DDQA) for image quality optimization and quality assurance for digital dental imaging.
